Mavericks win 3-1

Duluth winning streak snapped, Mavs win 3-1 on only 15 shots

UNO leads 2-1 after period 2

Andrew Schmit gets the first goal of his career at 12:33 of the second and the Mavs hold the lead for the final 7 and 1/2 minutes. A melee near the UNO bench on a delayed penalty ended in Alex Simonson running into UMD goaltender Reiter on his way to the bench for the extra attacker. Three Mavs go to the box, one Bulldog on two 2 minute minors.

The Mavs still have 1:54 off the penalty to kill to start the third and trail in shots 27-12

Second Period All Tied 1-1

Mavs got a power play goal in the first but UMD answered to start the second period. The Mavs have killed a penalty and just went scoreless on their own chance. Montpetit had a step on the D breaking into the offensive zone and got a breakaway but put his chance high.

Mavs being outshot 17-9 right now.

Mavs Lose Sellout Game 6-2

Duluth's J.T. Brown gets a hat trick and four points to lead the Bulldogs to a 5-2 victory. Too many mistakes to start the game killed UNO in this one. Two goals scored within a minute of each other got Duluth up 2-0 less than two minutes in then the Bulldogs did it again scoring two in less than a minute in the third period.

UNO appeared to have the momentum after Faulkner stopped a penalty shot. Yet a faceoff win then a laser from Brown just a split second later proved to be the difference.

Kind of a tough pill to swallow when the program gets a national tv audience and a packed house. It will be interesting to hear what the players and Blais have to say after the game.

Mavs and Bulldogs Tied 2-2 after Two

22 seconds into the second Montpetit gets the Mavs on the board, putting a sweet deke on goaltender Reiter then sliding it past the right leg as Reiter was sprawled out on the ice. The second goal came just five minutes later when UNO finally got a break on a loose puck in the crease.

Off of one of the many odd-man rushes created to start the second period, the loose puck finds Matt White who puts it five hole to tie it at 2. Duluth was called for slashing on the play but the Mavs couldn't get a third goal to take the lead on the ensuing power play.

UNO's defense was not making the same mistakes as in the first period and it was rather evident. Faulkner faced more shots in the second than he did in the first but the shots weren't as good of quality on the first.

Twice Faulkner made excellent saves, coming out of the net to cut down the angle on a wide-open shot and getting a pad on it. Later he showed off some nifty glove work and kept the score 2-2.

Montpetit and Hendrickson both went to the box to end the second, starting the third 4 on 4

UNO Down 0-2 After One Period

With a national tv audience and a packed house I'm not sure how this could have started any worse. Duluth gets two goals before the game is three minutes old then Josh Archibald is called for a 5 minute major for checking from behind and given a game misconduct.

Faulkner's first goal could have been prevented. A giant rebound came out to the slot and Brown put it easily into an open net. His second was a pretty good move from DeLisle to beat Faulkner high on the stick side.

Still unsure about how serious Archibald's hit was. The ref that made the call was the one furthest away. On the five minute major UNO finally caught a break and had the final rush end in a shot that caromed off the goalpost with an empty net.

The Mavs really only had one serious scoring chance and Montpetit ruined the only power play chance when he got called for obstruction 39 seconds into UNO's power play. Unsure if maybe the crowd and the sellout got the boys nervous. It's probably more than Duluth is #1 in the nation and playing like it.
